OUR VISION FOR
NEXT GENERATION DISCIPLESHIP

Monterey Church’s mission is to make disciples (those who have surrendered their lives to following Jesus, and are growing to live and love like Him, while leading others to do the same).

In a post-Christian culture (where even 50% of high school students actively involved in their church are choosing to walk away from their faith after graduation), we believe this is a unique and important moment in time that is ripe with opportunities for introducing the next generation to the Gospel, and equipping them to follow Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Monterey Church is in the process of building and restructuring a team that is devoted to the discipleship of the next generation (from cradle to transitioning to college). In addition to the amazing, highly dedicated, volunteer leaders that are currently serving our children, this new model will require the hiring of a Family Ministries Director (part-time position) to oversee and work alongside a team of approximately 2-4 GoKids Directors who are committed to lead at least 1 Sunday morning per month (and will receive a stipend for each Sunday leading).

The Family Ministries Director’s (FMD) role is to create, oversee and lead environments for our GoKids (nursery to 5th grade) and Students (6th-12th grade) that fosters an encounter with Jesus, learning His Truth, and encourages living according to His ways along with other Jesus followers. This includes partnering with parents/guardians/grandparents, and equipping and empowering them to lead their children to grow as disciples of Jesus.

We are also hiring 2-4 people to serve as GoKids Directors, who are committed to lead and oversee at least one Sunday morning GoKids gathering per month (held at our 401 Alvarado Street building called “Go City”). This will allow more people to lead and provide diverse perspectives and input regarding our ministries for those children 6 months to 5th grade, while also allowing all team members (including the Family Ministry Director) to participate in the adult worship gathering most Sundays each month.

ABOUT US

Monterey Church is a multi-generational, multiethnic movement of Jesus followers that are committed to growing to live and love like Jesus, while leading other to do the same. We believe that we grow as disciples when, by the power of Holy Spirit, we are regularly incorporating God’s Word, community and spiritual practices into our daily rhythms.

While we gather regularly in the heart of Downtown Monterey, California, our mission is to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20) in our neighborhoods, city, country and internationally as the Lord leads us.

Founded in 2006, Monterey Church has had the unique opportunity to equip and empower thousands of individuals and families who live in the area, and those who have come to and through our city due to military assignments (Naval Postgraduate School, Defense Language Institute), college (CSUMB, MIIS, MPC, etc.) and tourism.

As the Lord is willing, we are committed to continuing to introduce more people to our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, and to equip and empower more people to grow as disciples, to go and make disciples and even plant churches as the Spirit leads!

OUR LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE

We believe that Monterey Church is best led with multiple leaders and good systems of accountability, which is consistent with the New Testament principles of church leadership that emphasized plurality.

Our Elder Board is a team of volunteers who provide spiritual oversight, direction, and leadership for the church. They entrust the implementation of that direction to the staff and ministry leaders under the leadership of the Lead Pastors.

The Lead Pastors are currently the Teaching Pastor and the Executive Pastor. This shared, collaborative approach to leadership allows each pastor to flourish within his particular gifting, promotes health of both the pastors and the body, and is more effective in furthering Monterey’s Church’s mission (“The Great Commission”).

We are excited to build a Next Generation Ministries Team that incorporates a similar type of collaborative leadership model, and believe this style of leadership will have many of the same benefits for our Team Leaders and for the effectiveness of making disciples!
